Risk Training Professionals (RTP) will ensure that support is available to students to assist them in successfully completing their course and that students are made aware of these support services throughout their study. Support options for students to assist them in their successful completion includes:
- Assessment guides
- Assessment support workshops
- One-on-one consultations
- Reasonable adjustments
Student learning and wellbeing support are individual and may be complex. A student requiring support may be identified through a variety of sources, including:
- Monitoring of students by trainers and assessors
- During their initial enrolment into the training
- Self-referral by a student
- When a student seeks assistance from RTP
The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) requires RTOs to customise their services to facilitate the successful participation of people with a disability in education, training, and employment. Students are encouraged to advise RTP on enrolment if they require additional support or adjustment, we will then work with the student to develop an appropriate plan to support their learning experience, including access to the course materials ahead of time, adjustments to the training room, or any other adjustments to support their learning.
RTP is committed to providing a culturally safe and inclusive environment for all students, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse learners, and LGBTQIA+ learners. Training and assessment practices are designed to reflect inclusive values, and cultural or spiritual needs will be considered when planning support strategies or making reasonable adjustments.
Students with Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Needs
RTP must ensure that in developing, adapting, or delivering training and/or assessment products and services:
- Methods used to identify learning needs, and methods for designing training and assessment, are documented
- The requirements of the Training Package are met
- Core and elective units, as appropriate, are identified
- Customisation meets the requirements specified in the relevant Training Package
- LLN requirements are considered when developing the learning capacity of the individual and are consistent with the essential requirements for workplace performance specified in the relevant units of competency or outcomes of accredited courses. Where students attend with English as an additional language, we will liaise with the learner to determine if their level of English is sufficient to complete the program. If not, we will work with the student to determine an appropriate adjustment for their needs
- Delivery modes and training and assessment materials which meet the needs of a diverse range of learners are identified.
RTP has effective strategies for learner support, monitoring and assessment, centred around understanding the individual learner’s specific needs and tailoring our strategies to support these. Further guidance is provided below.
How Support is Provided
- The learner services team will review the individual training needs with the Learner as part of their initial enrolment into the course.
- If provided by the learner, the enrolment team will conduct a pre-training review of each Learner’s previous education and training and identify any RPL or Credit Transfers that may be applicable.
- Generally, if a learner has completed a Certificate IV level qualification or completed year 12 or equivalent, their language, literacy and numeracy could be assumed as sufficient unless the proposed qualification has high demands in numeracy and literacy.
- The learner services team will enrol the learner and individual learner’s needs are then passed onto the Trainers/ other relevant staff who will determine the support needs of individual learners and provide access to the educational and support services necessary for the individual learner to meet the requirements of the training product as specified in training packages or VET accredited courses.
RTP provides a range of post-enrolment support options for learners where a LLN need has been identified, these include but are not limited to:
- Development of an individual learning plan
- Access to course materials ahead of time
- Increased monitoring during the completion of the course
- Additional time to submit assessments
- The application and recording of reasonable adjustments to assessment processes during the delivery of training and assessment
- Learners from non-English speaking backgrounds may be referred to external support services
- Testing of training materials with accessibility tools, such as screen readers.
Mental Health Wellbeing and Support
RTP recognises that learners may experience personal or emotional challenges that impact their ability to engage in learning. RTP is committed to supporting learner wellbeing though:
- Encouraging self-referral and help-seeking
- Providing confidential referrals to external counselling for mental health services where appropriate
- Flexible learning plans where health-related barriers to learning are identified
Trainers and staff are encouraged to refer students who may be struggling with stress, anxiety, or other wellbeing concerns to the Operations Coordinator for further support.
Privacy and Confidentiality
All personal information shared by students as part of the support process is treated confidentially and in accordance with RTP’s Privacy Policy. Information will only be shared with relevant staff where necessary to enable appropriate support or comply with legislative requirements.
