What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 provides the framework to help you protect one of your most important assets – your people. It helps streamline your management systems, processes, and controls as it aligns with the requirements in other management systems standards.

How does ISO 45001 help streamline systems, controls, and processes?

The ISO 45001:2018 Safety Management Systems standard aligns to the harmonised structure contained within other standards, including ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management Systems), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management Systems), and ISO 27001:2022 (Information Security Management Systems), among others. Standards that follow the harmonised structure are structured the same way to give a consistent approach, allowing for easier integration for those organisations that wish to implement more than one standard.

What is ISO 45003?

ISO 45003:2021 is an international standard that provides practical guidance on managing psychosocial risks within an OH&S management system. It is designed to sit alongside ISO 45001 and focuses specifically on psychological health and safety at work.

The standard supports organisations in identifying, assessing, and controlling psychosocial hazards such as excessive workload, role ambiguity, workplace conflict, bullying, harassment, fatigue, poor change management, and organisational culture issues. It encourages a structured risk assessment approach, helping organisations consider how work is designed, managed, and experienced by workers.

How does ISO 45001 training benefit our organisation?

ISO 45001 training builds internal capability to identify hazards, carry out structured risk assessment processes, and manage workplace risks in a more consistent and disciplined way. This course will give you the skills to evaluate controls, test system effectiveness through internal audits, and address gaps before they escalate.

It also strengthens safety performance by improving how risks are documented, monitored, and reviewed at both operational and leadership levels. With clearer audit processes and stronger oversight, decision-makers gain better visibility of workplace risks and greater assurance that health and safety systems are functioning as intended.

Is ISO 45001 certification mandatory in Australia?

No, ISO 45001 certification is voluntary. However, many organisations adopt the standard to strengthen risk assessment processes, demonstrate their commitment to creating safer workplaces, and meet client or contractual requirements. Certification can also support tender eligibility and stakeholder assurance.

What industries benefit most from ISO 45001 training?

ISO 45001 applies across all industries, including construction, manufacturing, mining, transport, healthcare, government, utilities, logistics, and professional services. Any organisation that manages workplace risks, engages contractors, or operates in a regulated environment can benefit from a structured approach to managing OH&S risk.
