It’s designed for businesses that build, supply, or use AI-based products and services, helping them put the right policies, processes, and controls in place across the full AI lifecycle. The standard provides guidance on managing AI-specific risk, reducing bias, improving transparency, supporting fairness, and making sure there is appropriate human oversight.

It’s also worth noting that ISO/IEC 42001 is the world’s first AI management system standard and, unlike many other AI governance frameworks, is certifiable.

ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO/IEC 23894 both support responsible AI governance, but they do different things.

ISO/IEC 42001 is the broader AI management system standard. It helps organisations manage how AI is developed, used, governed, and improved across the business. It is also certifiable, which means organisations can be formally audited against it.

ISO/IEC 23894 focuses more narrowly on AI risk management. It provides guidance on how to identify, assess, and manage AI-related risks, but it is not certifiable on its own.

In simple terms, ISO/IEC 42001 is the overarching management framework, while ISO/IEC 23894 is the practical risk guidance that can help support it.

An ISO/IEC 42001 policy template is a document used to help organisations draft the AI Policy required under Clause 5.2 and Annex A.2.2 of the standard.

The policy acts as a foundational governance document for the AI management system. It should be informed by the organisation’s business strategy, values, AI risk profile, legal requirements, and wider risk environment.

A good template will usually cover the principles that guide AI-related activity, along with a process for managing policy exceptions. However, ISO does not provide an official template, so these documents are generally sourced from third-party providers and adapted to suit the organisation.

ISO/IEC 42001 sets out the requirements for building and maintaining an AI management system.

It follows the same harmonised structure as other management systems standards including ISO/IEC 27001, covering organisational context, leadership, planning, support, operations, performance evaluation, and continual improvement.

The standard also includes Annex A, which lists 38 AI controls across areas such as governance, risk management, data, AI system development, human oversight, and monitoring. These controls are not all mandatory. Organisations select the ones that apply based on their AI risks, objectives, and use cases.

To get ISO/IEC 42001 certified, your organisation needs to develop and implement an Artificial Intelligence Management System, or AIMS, that shows how you are managing risks and AI systems responsibly.

This usually starts with defining the scope of your AI projects, completing a gap analysis, and assessing AI risks across areas like governance, data, transparency, human oversight, and system performance. From there, you put the right policies, controls, training, and monitoring processes in place to help implement ethical AI practices across the organisation.

An accredited certification body then completes a two-stage audit, first reviewing your documentation, then checking how your AI management system works in practice. Once approved, certification is typically valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits.
