ISO 9001:2026 FDIS released ahead of expected publication

The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) for ISO 9001:2026 has been released, providing organisations with a clearer view of the direction of the revised standard ahead of expected publication in September.

No major structural change expected

Similar to ISO 14001’s revision in April, the revision does not introduce major structural change for organisations already operating effective quality management systems. Instead, the update is focused on reinforcing how organisations maintain operational control, consistency, and effective decision-making within increasingly complex operating environments.

Areas receiving greater attention

Areas receiving greater attention include the integration of quality culture and ethical behaviour into an organisation’s leadership requirements, oversight of an organisation’s supply chain and security, technological adoption and adaptation, and the alignment of the QMS with an organisation’s strategy. Risks and opportunities will also receive more focus, separating risk management and mitigation from the pursuit of opportunities for improvement.

What this means for organisations

For organisations whose quality management systems already align closely with operational practice, the transition is likely to be relatively manageable. However, for organisations where systems do not align effectively with day-to-day operations, the revision may provide a useful opportunity to review how well the QMS supports operational performance and customer satisfaction.
